hi everyone - since this is a slow season for alot of us, just wondered how people do selling ‘on-line’, sites like ESTY - is it worth the time and trouble? - one of the reasons I’m asking this is because the shows are really getting expensive and I would like a steadier income from my work…your thoughts??

Etsy is just like any other online selling site…. it is hard to be seen in the masses.  Sales on etsy are slow just like they are on other sites.  You may join the guild section and network with others in your area.  For the price, it isn’t a bad deal but don’t expect great things, like make a living…....

My first attempt to sell on etsy resulted in zero sales. I decided to try again and put more product on and it started to get some sales.
It takes a little time to get your items listed but it is worth it. I wasn’t ready to set up my own web-site so I went the etsy route for my online exposure, I am able to give a link directly to my shop. I put a link to my etsy shop in every item I sell on ebay. The fee’s on etsy are very reasonable, ebay gets more exposure but you pay 4 times the fee’s. I say it’s worth it for sure. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get sales immediately, try new titles and key words and keep listing more product, it’s only .20 per listing. Send links to your shop every chance you get. The best thing is waking up and finding you made a sale last night while you slept…..once you experience that you will be hooked. Also, you can print shipping labels right from the etsy site.

I’ve been on Etsy for almost 5 years and it has both good sides and bad sides.  The pros are that you can get exposure and make your art available 24/7 online.  It’s nice to be able to send people to your shop site when they’re debating a purchase in person; they can think it over and find you again even after the show/festival is over.  I’ve been contacted by a few large companies wanting to do bigger projects who’ve found me through Etsy—that alone makes it worth it for me.

However, I’m not going to lie, it’s a commitment that can take time to produce results.  You need to be able to post good pictures and write good descriptions and for artists who produce lots of one-of-a-kind works this can get really time-intensive (verses being able to recreate a product so you only have to do all the listing work once).

I think on the whole it’s worth it for me, but it might not be a good fit for everyone.  I’m happy to answer specific questions, if you have any.
