Writing a Press Release to increase your Art, Craft, and Festival Business | December 2009 |
Press releases can be an effective advertising tool. |
Nowadays, there are so many ways to get the word out about your business that some people may forget about the traditional press release. Although you no longer have to put your press release strictly in newspapers, this form of communication can be an excellent way to draw customers to the next fair or festival at which you’ll appear.
First off, you’ll need to write your actual press release. If you plan on using several of them in different papers or for different shows, you can write a basic document and then doctor it up to fit different occasions. Gather up all the interesting information you can about your business, including, especially, exactly what makes your product unique when compared to those of thousands of other vendors.
Then, you can write a quick outline for your press release. You’ll want to do this so that your information is coherent and has a certain flow that you may not be able to get by simply winging it. Be sure that your outline states what your business is, a few interesting facts about you or the business, what you sell, and where you’ll be appearing next.
After you have an outline, you can simply fill in the blanks. Press releases are typically short, so don’t overdo it on length, and be sure that the release is easy to read, light, and full of personality. If you’re having trouble with getting the wording just right, try reading what you’ve got aloud to yourself or another person, as this always helps you clarify and tighten up your language so that you can get your meaning across in a more direct, personal way.
Finally, give your press release a catchy title, and then have someone else – or several other people – edit it for grammar, content, and style. It may be hard to catch your own errors, so don’t be embarrassed to have other people point them out for you. Most of all, you want this document to be perfect so that your potential customers aren’t distracted from your main message by petty errors.
Once you have a press release written, you’ll want to figure out where to publish it. You might consider web sites surrounding the fairs and festivals you’ll work at, or you might create your own website for the purpose of drawing business to yourself. And don’t, of course, forget the traditional press; send your press release in to area newspapers and run it as a large ad.
The 4th Annual Winter Wine Fest & Craft Show will be held at the Jefferson Fair grounds in the Activity Center on March 13th from 10a.m. to 5p.m.
With 14 Wisconsin wineries on hand to sample their award winning wines and a retail wine booth where the wines can be purchased that day. What fun to sample, brings your family and friends for the day.
Then stroll through the 55 crafters and smell the scents of the products and see the furniture, dips, candies, jewelry, textiles, yard items, candles, pottery and more.
Sit a spell and have a bowl of soup and sandwich while you rest you can listen to the wonderful music. Top that all of with homemade ice cream!
This even is sponsored by Calico Cottage~Rock River Winery & Watertown Kiwanis with some proceeds going to community projects. Our big project right now is “Fighting Childhood Obesity” along with scholarships and more.

My home based business is Tupperware. Would this be allowed in your arts and craft show? The Modular mates would be perfect for holding all those supplies needed for crafters. Could you let me know via email? either way? I would like to represent Tupperware at this event.
